How To Interpret Health Test Results

 

Hip scoring is a procedure used to determine the degree of hip dysplasia in dogs. The lower the score, the less the degree of dysplasia present. The minimum (best) score for each hip is zero, and the maximum (worst) is 53, giving a range for the total of 0 to 106. For example, a hip score of 5/4 (total of 9) is good, whilst a hip score of 33/21 (total of 54) is poor.

 

Elbow scoring is a procedure used to determine the degree of elbow dysplasia in dogs. Similar to hip scoring, the lower the score, the less the degree of dysplasia present. The minimum (best) score for each elbow is zero, and the maximum (worst) is 3, giving a range of 0 to 3. For example, an elbow score of 0/0 is excellent, whilst an elbow score of 3/3 is severe. If the score is uneven (eg. Right 1 Left 0), the higher number is used as the dog's elbow score.

 

Eye testing is a procedure used to scan for the genetic disorder "prcd PRA". Inherited as a recessive trait, this disease causes cells in the retina to degenerate and die, ultimately causing blindness. There are three types of possible results from a prcd test - "Clear" (normal), "Carrier", and "Affected". A dog with a Clear result can be bred with any dog, producing an extremely low risk of prcd-affected offspring. A dog with a Carrier result should be bred only with Clear dogs, again producing an extremely low risk of prcd-affected offspring. A dog with an Affected result should be bred only with Clear dogs - however the risk of prcd disease in their offspring will be very high.

  
 

 

In summary, it is the parents of the litter who are scored, and not the puppies. Only dogs that are to be bred from are usually hip and elbow scored, there is no need to score pet puppies that won't be used for breeding. The Health Test information is primarily for breeders and puppy buyers to decide if the dog is suitable for future breeding purposes. Hip and elbow scoring are done once in a dog's life only, and the scores remain with them for the rest of their life.
